How to Choose Boxing Gloves: Weight, Type, and Fit Guide
Not all gloves are created equal. Sparring gloves, bag gloves, and competition gloves serve different purposes.
Glove Weight (Ounces)
| Weight | Best For |
|---|---|
| 8-10 oz | Competition. Light, fast, less padding. |
| 12 oz | Bag/pad work for lighter fighters (under 150 lbs). |
| 14 oz | Bag/pad work for heavier fighters. Light sparring. |
| 16 oz | Sparring (standard for most gyms). Maximum padding to protect your sparring partner. |
| 18-20 oz | Heavy fighters sparring, extra protection. |
The rule: Use 16 oz for sparring, always. Anything lighter puts your training partner at unnecessary risk.

Glove Types
Bag/Training Gloves
Designed for hitting heavy bags, focus mitts, and Thai pads. Firmer padding, more compact shape. Not suitable for sparring because the denser foam transmits more force to your partner.

Sparring Gloves
Softer, more padded, rounder shape. Designed to spread impact over a larger area to reduce injury risk for both fighters. 14-16 oz minimum.
Competition Gloves
Provided by the sanctioning body on fight night. Usually 8-10 oz with minimal padding. You do not buy these yourself.
MMA Gloves
4-6 oz open-finger gloves. Allow grappling while still enabling striking. Much less padding than boxing gloves. Used exclusively in MMA competition and training.
Fit Guide
- Snug but not tight: Your fingers should reach the top of the glove without bunching. You should be able to make a tight fist.
- No sliding: The glove should not slide around your hand when you throw punches. If it does, it is too large or the wrong shape for your hand.
- Wrist support: A long, wide Velcro strap provides more wrist support than a short strap. Lace-up gloves offer the most support but require a partner to put on.
